Black Crow Preschool Halloween Craft
The Black Crow Preschool Halloween Craft can add an interesting touch to your Halloween displays, especially if you plan to use a Halloween scarecrow. Since it requires a few steps, the preschooler can easily put together the Black Crow Preschool Halloween Craft if the parent does some preparation before hand. However, since there is repeated down time for letting various stages of the craft dry, it may take more than one day to complete it.
Materials You Will Need
1 plastic foam egg
1 plastic foam ball for the head, proportionate to the egg
A spoon to dig out a hollow in the egg shape
Craft clue that sticks to plastic
Black tempera paint
Black poster board
1 Black chenille stick
2 shiny black buttons or beads for eyes
Toothpick
How to Make it
Parent Preparation
Step 1:
Start with the larger end of the egg. This will be the part that connects to the head. Scoop out a hollow in the larger end of the egg for the head to nestle in. Test to be sure it is a nice, snug fit.
Step 2:
Precut two wings and a strip for the tail from the poster board. Cut two narrow triangles for the beak.
Step 3:
Cut chenille stick into two 2-inch pieces and two 2 ¼-inch pieces.
Preschooler Steps
Step 1:
Paint one half of the egg and one half of the ball black. Allow to dry. Paint the other half. Allow to dry completely before proceeding.
Step 2:
Glue the wings to the side of the egg, the point of the wing towards the small end of the egg.
Step 3:
Glue the tail on the top of the small end of the egg. Allow to dry completely before proceeding.
Step 4:
Put the toothpick in the ball where you think the neck should be. Put craft glue in the hollow in the big end of the egg. Push the toothpick down into the body of the egg until the head is nestled in the hollow. Let dry completely.
Step 5:
Bend the triangles of poster board a bit to make them curve and glue them to the head for a beak. Glue the two shiny black beads on for eyes.
Step 6:
Wrap one 2-inch piece of chenille stick around one 2 ¼-inch piece about an inch from the end to form a three-pronged foot. Do the same with the other two pieces. Insert the leg portion of the chenille sticks into the bottom of the egg. Reinforce by gluing around the edges of the holes. Allow to dry completely.
Liven It Up
If you like, you can add black feathers to the bird with the craft glue. Feathers can often be purchased by the bag of one or multiple colors at craft stores and from craft catalogues. Feathers are great for adding realistic detail.
If your preschooler wants the crow to “fly”, glue fishing line to the center of its back near the shoulders. Allow to dry and reinforce with black masking tape.
Uses for the Preschool Black Crow Halloween Craft
The crow may be hung just about anywhere by attaching paperclip opened to form an “S” to the end of the fishing line. If the feet are sturdy enough, it can also stand on a table or shelf.
Use the Preschool Black Crow Halloween Craft in any of the Preschool Family Craft Halloween displays, but it is particularly effective perched on the hat or shoulder of the scarecrow in the Scarecrow and Company Halloween Porch Display.
