Preschool Fabric Christmas Wreath
The Preschool Fabric Christmas Wreath is one of the simplest Christmas wreaths that your preschooler can make. All you need is a Styrofoam wreath, strips of fabric, craft glue, water, and a wide paint brush. The Preschool Fabric Christmas Wreath can be made from left over scraps of Christmas print fabric, or, if you don’t have any leftovers, you can simply buy fabric in Christmas prints or colors. You shouldn’t need more than a yard of 45” fabric, probably less, but it depends on the size of the Styrofoam base. To estimate how much fabric you will need, measure the size of the wreath to be covered and calculate the total surface. Include the circumference, the thickness, and twice the width of the circle of Styrofoam in your calculations.
Materials you will Need
1 Styrofoam wreath base
Bright fabric cut in strips about two inches wide and twelve inches long
White glue
3-inch wide flat paint brush
Water
Pie pan or dish for water-glue mix
Miniature stuffed animals from craft store
Aluminum foil
Fabric strip or ribbon for hanging
How to Make It
Step 1:
Lay the wreath on a covered surface with a large square of aluminum foil underneath to keep it from sticking.
Step 2:
Mix equal parts of white glue and water in the dish or pie pan.
Step 3:
Dip one strip of fabric into the glue-water mixture and begin to wrap it around the wreath in a spiral. Wet the brush in the mixture and smooth down the fabric with it as you go. Try to avoid gaps in the fabric.
Step 4:
When the first fabric strip runs out, begin a second one, overlapping the end of the first one.
Step 5:
Continue around until the entire wreath is covered in this way.
Step 6:
If there are any gaps where the Styrofoam shows, cut a scrap of matching fabric and glue it into the gap.
Step 7:
Using undiluted glue, glue the stuffed animals evenly spaced around the ring.
Step: 8
Have an adult tie a bow for hanging at the top.
Step 9:
Hang to dry where the wreath with not touch anything it can stick to.
Step 10:
If you want to use the paintbrush again, wash it thoroughly in warm water to remove all traces of glue.
Helpful Tips for Parents
Tip 1:
This craft is quite messy so it’s best done outdoors or in a room with no carpet.
Tip 2:
Be sure the sleeves are short or rolled up and your preschooler wears an apron or old clothes.
Tip 3:
If you think your preschooler will be upset about gluing the stuffed animals to the wreath instead of playing with them you can use poster board cutouts instead. Use a coloring book or cookie cutters for a template. Alternatively, you can tie the animals on instead of gluing them and then they will be removable.
