Preschool Family Quilt Wall Hanging

This preschool family quilt wall hanging is a great way to celebrate your family and your family history. It's easy to make because you use pre-made canvas squares with grommets in the corners to tie it together. No is sewing involved in making this preschool family quilt wall hanging.

Materials You Will Need

Pre-made canvas squares with grommets in each corner
(Oriental Trading Company is a great source for this)
Ribbon or yarn ties
Fabric Pens
A rod long enough to hang your quilt from
Curved curtain rod holder

How to Make it

Step1: Decide what your quilt will be about.
As a family, create a plan for your quilt. What will it represent? Will you commemorate family events? Will you create squares telling facts about your family such as your culture or ancestry?

Step 2: Decide how your quilt will look.
There is an endless number of things you can do here. You can draw pictures and write information with fabric pens. You can trace family handprints and/or footprints.

If you have a printer that will make iron-on transfers and digital photographs, you can iron family photos onto the canvas. Alternatively, you can make picture pockets from clear vinyl or cover photos which clear Contact Paper and glue them onto the quilt.

You can make decorations with puffy paint or any kind of fabric paint. You can use glitter, sequins, and buttons, anything you like; the combinations are infinite.

Step 3: Plan how the squares will be organized.
When all the squares are finished, lay them out on a big surface such as your floor and decide how they will be arranged. If you have some blank squares, include them. They can be removed and decorated at a later time.

Step 4: Put the quilt together.
Tie the squares together by putting the ribbon or yarn through the grommets of adjoining squares and tying them firmly.

Step 5: Hanging the quilt.
Ideally, the ribbons along the top should be cut long enough to also go around your rod after they have been used to tie the squares together. To be sure of this, measure the circumference of your rod before you cut the ribbon and compensate for the additional length needed. You also need to put ribbons through the outside top holes of the top squares to attach it to the rod. Hang your curtain rod holder on the wall and place the rod in it.
