Thumbprint Friendship Necklace Preschool Craft

February is International Friendship Month. Why not make a craft with your preschooler that can be shared with his/her friend. This Thumbprint Friendship Necklace Preschool Craft is an easy project that will allow your preschooler to show just how much their friend means to them. It would be great to make as a group then have the children exchange them with one another. Explain the meaning of friendship to your preschooler and sit down together to make this preschool friendship craft.

What You Need

Difficulty Level 2 out of 5Yarn or String
Clay or Play Dough
Pencil
Various Large Beads
Paints - optional

How To Make It

Step One:
Flatten out a small amount of clay or play dough into a circle about 2 and a half inches in diameter. Have your preschooler make a thumbprint in the center of it.

Step Two:
Help to write his/her name under the thumbprint by scratching it in with the pencil. On the back you can write a message such as “You are my friend.” Make a hole at the top and let it all dry.

Step Three:
Once the clay is dry, you can begin to make the necklace. Tie a knot at the end of the yarn and let your preschooler thread on some beads until it is half as long as you want it. Next, thread on the clay medallion. Finish off the necklace with more beads until it is the desired length.

Step Four:
Share this necklace with friends. It’s nice to make several so your preschooler can present one to all of the member of his/her playgroup, preschool class, or neighbors on the block.

Variations

You can let your preschooler paint the medallion to add to the crafting experience. This also makes a great gift for mothers and grandmothers in May for Mother’s Day. Just use thinner string, prettier beads and a smaller piece of clay - thumbprint on front, preschooler's name on back.
