Stars and Stripes Craft

Your preschooler is probably already familiar with what the American flag looks like but does he/she know the history of it or the meaning behind its colors? Gather up the materials, follow the steps here and enjoy sharing the facts about our flag.

What You Need

Construction Paper – red, white, blue, blackDifficulty Level 2 out of 5
Tempera Paints – red, white, blue
Star Shaped Cookie Cutters
Sponges – Cut into star shape and stripe shape

How to Make It

Step One:

Talk about the American flag with your preschooler.
Here are some facts:
7 red stripes, 6 white stripes=13 representing the 13 original colonies
50 white stars representing the 50 states of the union
     Red symbolizes courage
     White symbolizes purity
     Blue symbolizes justice

Step Two:

Pour out some red, white, and blue paint onto paper plates (one color per plate). Spread out the construction paper on your work surface.

Step Three:

Dip the star cookie cutters into various colors and “stamp” them onto the paper. Do the same with the sponge shapes as well. Let it all dry and display them proudly on the refrigerator or hang in your preschooler’s bedroom.

Variations

Make one yourself that looks like the American flag and see if your preschooler can make one similar. Attach a dowel so your preschooler can wave their flag. Sing patriotic songs while you make this educational preschool craft.
