Empty Food Boxes
Cut the flaps off of the open side of the box. Next, cut a hole for the mouth. This could be a smiling mouth, sad mouth, circle mouth, etc. Next paint the outside of the box, covering up all photos and writing. Now, begin to build your character by adding yarn for hair, buttons for eyes, construction paper hats – whatever you can think of. Your preschooler can stick his/her fingers through the mouth hole to be a tongue!
Old Wooden Spoons
The shape of wooden spoons lend themselves well to puppet making. Obviously, the scooping part will be the head, the handle will be the body. Your preschooler can choose what type of character the spoon puppet will be and adorn it accordingly. You can add clothes by wrapping fabric around the handle.
Paper Bags
Small lunch bags provide you with a blank slate for a more animated puppet. By sticking your hand inside and opening and shutting the “mouth” your preschooler can make their puppet talk. Decorate the bag with yarn, construction paper and the like to make it into an dog, pig, police man – the possibilities are endless.
Popsicle Sticks
Simply have your preschooler draw a face or make one with construction paper. Then glue it to a popsicle stick. Instant puppet!
Paper Plates
Staple to paper plates together, leaving an opening for your preschoolers hand to slip in. You then have a circle ready to be made into a head for any type of creature your preschooler can imagine.
Your Preschoolers Hands and Feet
When all else fails, get out the washable markers and turn your preschoolers hands or feet into puppets! Draw eyes, noses, and hair and your ready to go. This is perfect to do in the waiting room at the doctors office!
